Report: Oriol Romeu close to completing Southampton transfer

The Chelsea midfielder is set to sign with Southampton.

According to the Independent, Oriol Romeu is undergoing a medical with Southampton ahead of completing a move to the South Coast.

The 23-year-old midfielder currently plays for Chelsea, but talks have been ongoing for a number of weeks between the two teams, and a fee has now been agreed which will see him moved to St Mary’s Stadium.

Despite being contracted to the Blues, Romeu’s last game in English football came in 2012, having spent the last two seasons on loan with Valencia in La Liga, and then Bundesliga side Stuttgart.

The Spanish Under-23 international started his career in Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, before moving to Stamford Bridge in 2011.

He impressed under Andre Villas-Boas, but has never truly established himself in the side since the Portuguese coach’s departure, and a summer exit was expected.

The Saints are looking to bring in another defensive midfielder following the loss of Morgan Schneiderlin to Manchester United. They have already signed Jordy Clasie, but head coach Ronald Koeman wants another player to provide cover and competition.

Romeu may not have played much with the Blues, but he is still an experienced option, and at just 23-years-old, represents the kind of signing that Southampton want to make, being a young player with the ability to grow into his potential at St Mary’s Stadium.
