Report: Newcastle submit offer for Mason Holgate, Bournemouth holding talks

Newcastle United have reportedly submitted an offer for Barnsley defender Mason Holgate.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United have made an offer for Barnsley defender Mason Holgate - but Bournemouth are set to hold talks with the teenager.

Steve McClaren's side have snapped up first team players such as Chancel Mbemba, Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic, but the Magpies have also moved to sign one Football League prospect already this summer.

Striker Ivan Toney has arrived from Northampton Town having impressed in League Two, and now it's a League One prodigy on McClaren's radar.

Barnsley full back Mason Holgate, broke into the Tykes' first team last season, and his impressive displays have triggered interest from Premier League clubs as a result.

The right sided defender, 18, is set for talks with Bournemouth according to the Daily Mail, but the report also states that Newcastle have submitted a bid for the youngster.

The versatile full back, who can also play on the left hand side, would be a welcome addition for the Magpies, who will be looking to groom young defenders behind the likes of Daryl Janmaat and Fabricio Coloccini.

They may however have to try and outbid Bournemouth for his services, though the lure of playing at St. James' Park could help swing the move in McClaren's favour.

With Bournemouth holding talks, Holgate appears to be nearing an exit from Oakwell, and Newcastle appear to be well in the race for his signature.
