Report: Everton beat Bournemouth to the signing of Mason Holgate of Barnsley

The 18-year-old will join fellow Barnsley graduate John Stones at Goodison Park.

Everton are going to win the race for Barnsley defender Mason Holgate, according to The Sun.

They claim that the young defender has been the subject of bids from both Everton and Bournemouth – with both having £1 million bids accepted – whilst Newcastle United are also keen.

However, despite it being reported he was all set to join Bournemouth, this report claims he has been offered more chances for regular first-team football at Goodison Park and is therefore keen on making the switch to Everton.

He would of course not be the first Barnsley lad to swap Oakwell for Everton. John Stones arrived on Merseyside in 2013 and he has since gone on to become one of England’s best and most wanted defenders, with four caps for his country.

Holgate is just 18-years-old but has already made an impact for his current club, who he has been with for ten years.

The teenager, who had a trial at Manchester United this summer, is all set to join Stones at Everton and in the first-team.

It seems that Everton are ready to bypass the under-21s for the player and instead have him as a first-choice central defensive option.

Everton are thin on the ground in this area, after Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz both left this summer.
