Report: Aston Villa to re-ignite interest in Spurs midfielder Andros Townsend; Steve McClaren also linked

Reports suggest Aston Villa are back on the trail of Tottenham's Andros Townsend, while Newcastle are also said to be interested.

According to the Mirror, Aston Villa are set to reignite their long-term interest in Andros Townsend after the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder returned to training earlier this week.

Reports suggest that Tim Sherwood is a huge fan of the £15million-rated winger, who could be enticed to Villa Park with the promise of first-team football - with the Euro 2016 Championships in France on the horizon.

Despite previously committing to White Hart Lane, the player will no doubt understand that regular playing time is a necessity if he wishes to feature in Roy Hodgson's starting-eleven next summer.

Steve McClaren's Newcastle are also believed to be interested in his services, but Spurs maintain they are not prepared to compromise on his £15 million valuation; a price that could deter the two Premier League sides.

Due to his shoulder injury, Townsend did not play for the Lilywhites in the club's opening game of the season versus Manchester United - an eventual 1-0 defeat - although he did feature on 17 occasions last term, scoring two goals.

A winger, capable of playing on either flank, the Englishman would bolster his suitor's options out wide. He fashioned 13 chances - recording two assists - throughout the 2014/15 campaign, while completing 81% of his attempted passes.
