Joey Barton said Leeds fans have made the biggest push to try and sign him.
Joey Barton has hit a setback in his attempts to find a new club.
The midfielder himself has since confirmed the move is off, report The BBC, with West Ham deciding against a move due to a backlash from fans.
Barton may be reluctant to step down a division having been so close to a Premier League move, but will have to consider his options.
One club which could appeal are Leeds United, who The Sun reported earlier this summer had made a move to sign the former Newcastle and Manchester City man.
He has taken to Twitter to admit he would be open to a move, but there has not been contact as yet.
Open to anything mate. Just love playing football. (That's just being honest not a come and get me plea.) https://t.co/rW520yqOSZ— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) August 12, 2015
Barton revealed on Twitter last week that Leeds United fans had made the biggest play to try and convince him to sign this summer via social media.
With his ego dented by West Ham's u-turn, it would not be a surprise to see Barton look at a safer bet where he can see there will be no repeat.
If Barton were to get close to another move only to see fans force a club to call it off again it would be a nightmare for him, but such is the desire among vocal Leeds fans to see Barton sign, this is a slim possibility, even if there will be some fans with reservations.
HITC reported earlier this summer how Barton had previously praised Leeds' stadium and support.
With the club aiming to put together a promotion push, the experienced midfielder could be just the player they need to help them make the play-offs.
