After Newcastle United fans voted 72% in favour of Joey Barton returning to St James' Park, according to the Newcastle Chronicle, the player himself took to Twitter to express his appreciation towards the support.
His actions come just hours after the ex-Queens Park Rangers captain, who is currently a free agent, posted a video online informing fans that his reported move to West Ham United had fallen through after the club pulled out of talks - as per BBC Sport.
However, while fan power at the Boleyn Ground appears to have damaged Barton's chances of making an instant return to the top flight, the supporters at his former club, Newcastle, seem significantly more sympathetic towards his current situation.
Reacting to the unanimous poll result - in favour of bringing the 32-year-old back to St. James' Park - Barton said the following:
Barton may have had his ups and downs at Newcastle, but in the twilight years of his career would return as one of the Premier League’s most experienced individuals.
Despite his antics, both on and off the field, his passion while wearing the shirt earned him a rapport with the fans, and this is likely to be the driving force behind their current level of support.
