Why Newcastle would be smart to snap up Raphael Guerreiro for £8.8m

Newcastle United have been linked with the left-back-cum-winger.

According to a recent report from Chronicle Live Newcastle United are interested in signing Portuguese left-back Raphael Guerreiro from French side Lorient, although the Ligue 1 side’s president has valued him at £8.8million.

But if that is indeed the case Newcastle would be wise to snap up the 21-year-old before someone else does, because Guerreiro is exactly the type of exciting young signing the Magpies should be moving for.

The Portuguese international may not be a particularly famous name in England but he would be a very good addition to the blossoming Newcastle squad.

Steve McClaren’s side have already signed Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and Georginio Wijnaldum and a move for Guerreiro would continue the habit of bringing in gifted young players for reasonable fees.

The Portuguese is not your average left-back; indeed he can play anywhere down the left side and last season he scored seven goals and provided five assists in 34 league matches for Lorient.

In short he is a real attacking threat either from defence or on the wing and he could have a similar impact at St James’ Park as Jordan Amavi looks set to at Villa Park this season.

With a couple more additions Newcastle could be set for very good things under McClaren, and in Guerreiro they would be signing someone destined to be a solution to plenty of problems down the years.
