West Ham fans have their say on reports linking the Hammers with Joey Barton

West Ham Tube Sign

West Ham United's fans have commented after the midfielder was linked with a free transfer to Upton Park.

According to a report from the BBC, West Ham United are confident they will sign free agent Joey Barton in the next 48 hours.

The midfielder left Queens Park Rangers at the end of last season and he has been without a club all summer, but the latest suggestion is that the Hammers will bring the 32-year-old to Upton Park as part of Slaven Bilic’s new-look squad.

The news has divided opinion among West Ham fans with some of them commenting on HITC articles on the topic in the last 24 hours, and those thoughts make for interesting reading.

Some supporters feel signing the experienced midfielder for free would be canny business while others look at his past actions and feel it would be a risk not worth taking.

Barton played 99 times in total for QPR and he previously featured 145 times for Manchester City and 81 times for Newcastle United, as well as having a brief loan spell with Marseille.

Below are the thoughts of some West Ham fans that have made their way onto HITC Sport in recent hours:

Truth said: ‘Hope not, we don't need him there are much better options out there. Barton would be another Nolan so please DO NOT SIGN.

Craig said: ‘No he isn't. Barton can pass and can actually run. As long as he isn't his usual self then I say good signing.’

Truth said: ‘You will see if we sign him he is just going to be a problem child; if that's the case I'd rather have Morrison back, he is a much better player than Barton...Joey is not just going to accept second best, in other words sitting on the bench, and I think this could create some kind of conflict in the dressing room which will then lead to poor team morale. I won't be happy if we sign this player; you might be but I won't.’

John said: ‘He has a temper and he can be a dirty so-and-so but he was top with assists last season AND the captain. I'll go along with Bilic's choice.’

JohnBSheff said: ‘Barton is not only a trouble-maker he is 32 and we don't want or need him at West Ham; never seen the players as happy as on Sunday and together, and now we are looking at someone who will really unsettle the changing room, not much difference between the quality of Song when fit and Barton. IF and I TRUST we will not sign Barton, he will never be seen as an HAMMER!’
