West Brom lost to Manchester City, but Lambert impressed on his debut following his move from Liverpool.
It was a stale performance by the Midlands club, and Tony Pulis’ team were not set up well to counter the threat posed by City’s impressive players. The team were far too deep for much of the game, and it was not until the half-time introduction of Claudio Yacob - and the switch to 4-3-3 - that the Baggies started to look solid.
But they were already three goals down by that point, and getting back into the game proved too tough a challenge to overcome.
There were a number of debuts being made in the tie for Pulis’ side, with James Chester, James McClean and Rickie Lambert all making their first appearances for the club.
Chester struggled at right-back - not his natural position - and was often caught out by City debutant Raheem Sterling. McClean was acceptable, but his role was often more defensive than the attacking play he would be used to.
The real highlight was Lambert, who showed class playing up front alongside Saido Berahino.
He won a number of aerial duels, and helped out defensively when needed. He also had the Baggies’ best chances through a number of free-kicks which came close to hitting the target. Considering he has hardly trained with the team following his move from Liverpool, Lambert looks a step above some of his teammates, and it will be exciting to see how he improves after a couple of weeks of settling in.
Following the game, West Brom fans took to Twitter to express their pleasure at seeing Lambert taking to the field for his debut with the club.
We were great going forward IMO but had nothing to show for it. Lambert, Berahino and Morrison were a real threat. #wba— Lizzie Hayward (@ehayward93) August 11, 2015
Thought Lambert looked a cut above last night. Very composed, good awareness and first touch. Only negative is lack of pace. #wba— Baggies Galore (@BaggiesGalore) August 11, 2015
City were fantastic and a cut above anything else I've seen. Lambert oozes class and will get plenty of goals. Tough start last night. #wba— Brad (@patterson_paddy) August 11, 2015
So tactics were wrong. Just generally sloppy and lacking intensity. 2nd half was an improvement, and Saido and Lambert worked hard #wba— Throstle Fantastic (@ThrstleFantstic) August 11, 2015
Ok.Positives.We will be fine up front as long as we keep Saido he and Lambert looked good (esp. as they did not have the ball much) #wba— Darren Baker (@WallHallNumber5) August 11, 2015
Highlights though. Thought Lambert worked hard and looked a real threat in the air. Against weaker opposition he will get some goals. #wba— Dale Brookes (@Baggiebrookesie) August 11, 2015
+ves from #wba game tonight was Lambert looking bright & keen & me finding £10 walking back to car. Berahino looked good too.— Ade Brandwood (@baggie_ade) August 10, 2015
City were excellent, no complaints from me. Lambert played well and gives us a good option. I will be glad when the squad is complete #WBA— Matt Love (@lovwba23) August 10, 2015
