Willems has been in Newcastle, but the club do not want to sign him.
Willems travelled to St James’ Park at the weekend to watch former teammate Georginio Wijnaldum make his Premier League debut, but a report in the Shields Gazette has claimed that the Magpies are not looking to sign the left-back.
Rumours started concerning Willems’ future when he posted a cryptic tweet, saying ‘Fly to the future’ when he was on his way to Tyneside. Many suggested that this meant Willems was keen on a move to England, which is said to be true.
However, Newcastle do not look like the club who will be signing the Dutchman this summer - if he is to leave PSV Eindhoven.
The report states that, whilst Steve McClaren is tracking more signings, a left-back is not one of them. Willems has not held talks with the club, and his visit to Tyneside was merely to catch up with Wijnaldum.
The Magpies are still looking to sign a striker, with Charlie Austin number one priority, as well as a winger - with Lyon’s Florian Thauvin the main target.
Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummet are Newcastle’s current left-back pairing, and McClaren seems impressed enough by the duo to not look in the market for another.
