Report: La Liga club Sporting Gijon await Derby County decision on Julio Rodriguez after trial

Julio Rodriguez, Sporting Gijon

Derby County are said to be mulling over a decision whether to take Sporting Gijon defender Julio Rodriguez on loan following a trial.

According to Spanish publication El Confidencial, Julio Rodriguez has returned to Sporting Gijon following a trial spell at Derby County, with a potential loan move still up in the air.

The report states: ''The squad returned to training in a day of double training sessions, in which the principal novelty was this morning, the presence of central defender Julio (Rodriguez), who after having a trial with Derby County, is awaiting to see if a loan to the English team materialises."

The 19-year-old, who was promoted to the La Liga club's first team squad for last season, is a Spanish youth international and has been ever-present for Sporting's reserve side since making his debut in 2012.

Nevertheless, Rodriquez has only appeared twice for the senior side, both times in the Copa del Rey competition.

Why would Derby make a move for Rodriguez?

Although the Rams are well stocked for defenders, Farrend Rawson's loan move to Rotherham United and Jamie Hanson's promotion to the first-team squad has left youth coach Darren Wassall short of central defenders for his under-21 Premier League side.

Paul Clement, who will have an extensive knowledge of Spanish football, may have put his name forward as a replacement for Rawson in the under-21 side and potentially a star for the future.

A loan move would make sense, as it would act like an extended trial, but Sporting may want something in return for one of their more prominent youngsters.

Any deal between the clubs is unlikely to affect the first-team, but it could be one for supporters to keep an eye on as he could become a potential gem.
