Report: Celtic to revive interest in Brandon Mechele as potential replacement for Virgil van Dijk

Celtic have targeted the Belgian defender should Van Dijk leave for Southampton or Everton.

Celtic are already looking at a potential replacement for Virgil van Dijk, according to a report in the Daily Record.

The Dutch centre-back is wanted in the Premier League, with the Mirror claiming that both Everton and Southampton are looking at him.

The 24-year-old is a top class defender, and looks to be developing at an incredible rate. Signing him now would mean getting ahold of him at a relatively young age, and it is likely the asking price would not be too large.

With the allures of the Premier League turning Van Dijk’s head, Celtic are already looking at his replacement, and the Record claim that the Scottish champions have found the player they want.

Brandon Mechele currently plays for Club Brugge in Belgium, and the Bhoys made enquiries into signing him in April. They were rejected by the club, but Celtic believe they can now tempt them into selling Mechele, rated at £3 million - as per the report.

Brugge take on Manchester United in the Champions League play-offs next week, and manager Michel Preud’homme has made it clear he will not be sold before that date.

However, Ronny Deila will not be making a formal move for the 22-year-old until Van Dijk leaves, meaning that any transfer is likely to not occur until later in the transfer window.

It is stated that the Belgium Under-21 international is a priority target for Deila, although as of today, Van Dijk is still a Celtic player meaning a transfer is unlikely.
