Arsenal legend Martin Keown has told the Daily Mail where he feels the club’s defence needs to improve moving forward.
Keown has identified an area he feels the Gunners need to improve from a tactical point of view, as well as a quality he feels they need to show regularly throughout the season in terms of their emotion.
The Gunners were nowhere near their best as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat against West Ham United last weekend.
“Arsenal’s set-piece defending was poor but can improve and Petr Cech will get better,” he told the Daily Mail.
“The defenders do need to show more desire. They have to really love keeping clean sheets.”
Leadership in different areas needed
There needs to be some leadership in the Arsenal defence, which can help to deal with any tactical deficiencies and ensure that every Gunners defender is giving everything he has for the cause.
Someone needs to step forward and demand that the back four is well organised and disciplined, whether that’s someone like Petr Cech or an experienced defender like Per Mertesacker.
Arsenal are a side that traditionally take a little bit of time to find their best form at the start of a season, but the backline has to quickly get up to speed because they were exposed by West Ham badly last weekend.
It’s cliché and very obvious but if the defence can ensure that the side is keeping frequent clean sheets, it makes the job of the attack a bit easier in the respect that they only have to take one half chance to win a game.
