Former Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has explained on BBC Radio 5 live how Aston Villa striker Rudy Gestede is similar to West Ham United’s Andy Carroll.
Barton made the comment while commentating on Villa’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth away from home in Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Summer signing Gestede scored what proved to be the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute, heading home just 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute against the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium.
English midfielder Barton, who is currently a free agent after leaving Queens Park Rangers at the end of the 2014-15 campaign following their relegation from the Premier League, has compared the 26-year-old to former Liverpool and Newcastle striker Carroll.
“Gestede's movement reminds me of Andy Carroll,” the 32-year-old told BBC Radio 5 live.
Gestede was one of the best strikers in the Championship, and he has started his Premier League career with Villa in style.
The Benin international is a brilliant header of the ball, which is one of the main strengths of Carroll.
Against newly-promoted Premier League outfit Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, Gestede won as many as six headers during the 31 minutes he was on the pitch.
Since the start of the 2013-14 season, Gestede has scored 20 headed goals, five more than anyone else in the top four ties of English football.
