West Ham's Cheikhou Kouyate explains what Dimitri Payet told him before the Arsenal match

The West Ham United player scored the club's first goal of the new season courtesy of an assist from a summer signing.

West Ham United midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate has been speaking to the club’s official website about the Hammers’ 2-0 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Before the match all the talk was about the Gunners being viable title challengers this season but Slaven Bilic’s side impressed from the first minute to the last and came away with a comfortable victory courtesy of goals from Kouyate and Mauro Zarate.

Summer signing Dimitri Payet was sensational on his first league start in England, laying on the opening goal with a free kick, and Kouyate has since revealed that the Frenchman told him he would give him a chance to find the net.

Speaking after the game, the Senegal international told whufc.com, “Dimitri told me before that he’d give me one ball to score, and he did.

“The secret was playing together as one team. We know playing against Arsenal is difficult, but you need to work hard as one team to get a result.”

They certainly did that with all of West Ham’s side playing their part in the famous victory that has set them up brilliantly for their final year at Upton Park.

With the new players at the club and an impressive young manager in charge there is a good chance West Ham could be this season’s surprise package, although after beating Arsenal so emphatically they may not be a surprise for long.
