West Brom boss Tony Pulis discusses transfer speculation surrounding Saido Berahino

Saido Berahino

West Brom striker Berahino is wanted by Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle and Manchester City.

Berahino’s name has been circled around as a potential transfer target for much of the summer, but Tony Pulis has told the Mirror that West Brom want to keep ahold of their star, and that he believes Berahino would be wise to stay with the Baggies.

He said: “At the moment, Saido is with us. We are very pleased he is with us and we are hoping he will stay with us. He is a good player and we want him to stay at the football club. I believe another year playing regular football at West Bromwich Albion will make him a better player. It will make him a stronger character and better player, that is my opinion.”

Having scored 20 goals in all competitions last season, Berahino has been linked with a move to three of the Premier League’s biggest sides.

The young English forward is wanted by Manchester City, Tottenham and Newcastle, according to the Mirror, but West Brom have made it clear it will take a large transfer fee to prise him away from the Hawthorns.

He is just 22-years-old, English, and holds valuable homegrown status needed to fill Premier League quotas. On top of this, he is just a very talented player with a natural eye for goal and a real desire and hunger to improve.

With the Baggies’ ambitions likely to be mid-table security, it would come as no surprise to see Berahino wish to move to the likes of City or Spurs, who can both offer European football.

However, Pulis believes he would do well to stay with the club for at least another year as he will be able to play consistent first-team football with the Baggies, ensuring he continues to develop at his impressive rate.
