Former Newcastle United and West Ham United forward Bellamy played for a season with striker Gestede at Welsh outfit Cardiff City.
“I did a lot of due diligence, spoke to a lot of people who have played with him or coached him,” Sherwood told The Sun.
“Craig Bellamy was the one I spoke to most. He had him at Cardiff and he was very complimentary about him.”
Gestede made a dream start to his Villa career, scoring the winning goal in their opening game of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign against Bournemouth away from home on Saturday.
The Benin international striker’s goal in the 72nd minute proved to be the difference between the two sides at the Vitality Stadium.
The 26-year-old took two shots and had a shot accuracy of 50%, played eight successful passes, and won one free kick and six headers in 31 minutes.
Over the course of the 90 minutes at the Vitality Stadium, Villa had 42% of the possession, took seven shots of which three were on target, and earned three corners.
Hosts Bournemouth had 58% of the possession, took 11 shots of which just two were on target, and earned six corners.
