Chancel Mbemba impressed in his first start for Newcastle.
He said: “I've only known him for a week and been training with him even less than that, but he had a fantastic game. We will build a relationship together. I've told him that. We will save each other at different points of the season but that's what a centre-back and a goalkeeper do. He's a player - he's definitely a player. You could see how good he is out there and he's only going to get better.”
Krul played a vital role in keeping that scoreline down with some impressive saves, but the Mbemba and Fabricio Coloccini centre-back partnership showed a far improvement from the defensive work seen last season.
Whilst Coloccini looked completely off form last term, he appeared to be back to his usual self whilst next to the Congolese international, with their opposing styles of play working in tandem to provide great cover.
Mbemba is the more physical presence in the back-line, able to play the ball out of defence when needed, whilst Coloccini was sitting a deeper to control the entire defensive unit, utilising his leadership skills to bring unity to all the players.
The duo looked to be well in sync, and Krul will appreciate playing behind a defensive unit able to actually defend. He believes Mbemba impressed on his debut, and the 21-year-old will surely only get better with time and more experience at the heart of the Magpies defence.
