The former Newcastle United man has been reflecting on the opening-day 2-2 draw with Southampton.
Steve Watson believes Newcastle's 2-2 draw against Southampton was a 'fair result' but was worried by the ease with which the visitors netted against the St James' Park outfit.
Indeed, the Saints scored from two headers and Watson was worried that they also could have had another free header late on.
As such, the Magpies have plenty of room for improvement going forward in terms of their defending.
Overall, however, many were encouraged by Newcastle's display - and Watson did single out a big positive for his former club on Twitter: Georginio Wijnaldum, the club's £14.5 million summer signing (fee as reported by BBC Sport).
Fair result? 2 headers against again is a worry and they could have had another free header late on. Positives tho Wijnaldum looks a player— Steve Watson (@wattoon) August 10, 2015
BBC pundit Jermaine Jenas was most impressed by midfielder Moussa Sissoko against Southampton, while Danny Murphy fired a warning towards striker Aleksandar Mitrovic on Match of the Day.
But Watson's praise of Wijnaldum shows there are encouraging signs for Newcastle when it comes to their summer recruitment. The Dutchman scored a brilliant header for the Magpies, making an immediate impact after his big-money arrival on Tyneside.
Next up for Newcastle is a tough trip to Swansea City next weekend, who held Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
