Goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate secured the victory with new signing Petr Cech having a nightmare start for his new club.
When Arsenal signed the Czech Republic international from Chelsea it was hailed as the signing of the summer but he gifted West Ham the lead after failing to deal with Dimitri Payet’s cross.
The new West Ham signing was great throughout, looking a constant threat and doing what Arsenal fans hoped Mesut Ozil would do at the opposite end, so how did the Frenchman and the German compare in key areas?
The Arsenal star had a slightly higher passing accuracy – 88 per cent compared with Payet’s 81 per cent – but it was the West Ham player who had the bigger impact, getting an assist for the first goal.
Payet also won four times as many duels as Ozil – eight compared with just two – and the new Hammer was dispossessed just once all afternoon.
Ozil played twice as many key passes but the players in front of him could not put the finishing touches to the moves, so while the German international was not completely outclassed he was certainly overshadowed by a player who looks set to take the Premier League by storm.
