The Netherlands international featured in the Magpies’ Premier League clash against Southampton at St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
The 24-year-old started the encounter and played for 81 minutes, helping Steve McClaren’s side to a 2-2 draw.
Wijnaldum scored Newcastle’s second goal of the match, and he was happy with his first competitive appearance for his new club.

Newcastle’s performance against Southampton was not great, but there were some positive signs.
However, McClaren will not be pleased with his team conceding twice, especially at home in their opening game of the new season.
Newcastle are back in action on Saturday, when they take on Swansea City away from home at the Liberty Stadium in the Premier League.
