Guillermo Varela offered a timely reminder of his ability, by scoring an excellent solo goal for Manchester United's under-21 side.
The Uruguayan right-back was signed by Penarol in 2013 while David Moyes was manager, but has yet to make an impression on the first team.
He slipped behind Saidy Janko in the pecking order for the under-21 side over his debut year, and was at one stage also behind Marnick Vermijl.
Both players have since been sold, as has Rafael da Silva, and there remains a chance that 22-year-old Varela does have first team future at Old Trafford.
He was loaned out to Real Madrid's B side last season, where he played 33 games, scoring once.
Last night was his 21st game for United's under-21 side, and first goal in a Red Devils shirt, helping United to a 1-1 draw away at Leicester City.
With obstacles at the right-back spot fewer than they once were, his performance gave fans a sense of optimism that he could yet make his way into the first team.
Here's a look at what supporters had to say about Varela's display via Twitter...
Would love to see Varela get a chance in the first team squad #mufc— Red Kyber (@Red_Kyber) August 10, 2015
Great individual skill and goal from #MUFC no 2 Varela 1-1— Marg Cawley (@margcawley) August 10, 2015
Guillermo Varela should be ahead of Antonio Valencia in the first team. He would do a better job as back up RB to Darmian, easily.— • (@UtdDi) August 10, 2015
