The Reds had a poor recent record against Mark Hughes’ side but they came out on top at the weekend courtesy of a wonder-strike from Brazilian Philippe Coutinho.
Gomez shone throughout having already shown what he can do during pre-season and it seems that despite his age he is already the best option for Brendan Rodgers at left-back.
Speaking after the match, the 18-year-old told liverpoolfc.com, “One of the reasons I wanted to come to Liverpool is because Brendan is such a great manager giving young players opportunities and I’m thankful for that.
“That last few months I wold never have dreamed that I’d get the opportunity as quickly as I have.”
But having seized that chance it seems Gomez has now moved ahead of Alberto Moreno at left-back, even if the former is more commonly known as a centre-back.
In the short term, Gomez is likely to feature predominantly in a wider position but Liverpool fans will know they have a player who could be a vital part of their defence for the next decade or more.
Ultimately he is likely to feature in the heart of the defence, potentially alongside a player like Tiago Ilori if the young Portuguese can seize his chance as Gomez has done so emphatically.
