When Liverpool signed Joe Gomez from Charlton Athletic earlier this summer it looked as though the Reds were buying someone for the future rather than an instant solution to their problems at left-back.
However, after the 18-year-old’s Premier League debut against Stoke City on Sunday it seems Liverpool have a new fan favourite.
Prior to the weekend Gomez had played just 24 senior matches for Charlton, so this was always going to be a step up. But he proved more than ready for the challenge and by the final whistle there was no doubt the teenager should be starting for Liverpool on a regular basis this season.
It was Brazilian international Philippe Coutinho who won the match with what is fast becoming his trademark long-range strike, but Gomez played his part and it will be interesting to see how many chances Alberto Moreno gets in the months ahead.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Liverpool fans thought of Gomez’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Very impressed with Joe Gomez. Looked at home at this standard and no nerves that lad. Great buy #lfc credit to the transfer staff— 3-4-3 LFC (@Cafmatt) August 10, 2015
@LFC still not playing well the defence, but great performance from clyne and especially Gomez...— christoffel maranto (@christoffelmar1) August 10, 2015
@e_evol89 I thought the young lad Joe Gomez deserves particular praise for his debut. Great character. Like a young Bixente Lizarazu— Matt Deem (@mattdeem70) August 9, 2015
...Gomez and even to a point Firmino showed great things ahead. One thing I will say is that we improved hugely when Can came on. #lfc— Thomas Ellis (@tomellis19) August 9, 2015
Joe Gomez is already better than John Flanagan and Andre Wisdom. Just thought I'd put that out there. #LFC— Martin Skyba (@Skyba1982) August 10, 2015
If we play Joe Gomez at LB, we definitely need someone to cover his left side given that he gravitates to the LCB. That someone ≠ Henderson.— Leroy | LFC Impulse (@LFCImpulse) August 10, 2015
