German press rip into Arsenal duo Ozil and Mertesacker after opening defeat

Arsenal's loss to West Ham has been reported with interest in Germany.

Arsenal endured a nightmare start to the Premier League season, losing 2-0 at home to West Ham.

Particularly disappointing was playmaker Mesut Ozil, with centre-back Per Mertesacker part of the defence with was so poor for Cheikou Kouyate's opening goal.

Their lacklustre displays did not go unnoticed in their native Germany, with the press going to town on the duo.

German channel Sport1 was particularly scathing.

Their report was titled 'Unrest at Arsenal', focusing on Ozil's poor display and Mertesacker's comments after the game, describing him as 'bleating'.

The paper wrote that Mertesacker "trudged sullenly and with bowed head in the "Players' Lounge" at the Emirates Stadium," after the game.

Newspaper Die Welt described it as a horror show for the Gunners, and looking at how 16-year-old Reece Oxford of West Ham nullified Ozil's attack.

N-TV.De ran with the headline 'Ozil disappoints in Premier League opener', describing both he and World Cup winning teammate Per Mertesacker as 'unconvincing', with the former Real Madrid playmaker 'inconspicuous'.

Popular German website Spox wrote that Arsenal did not look like title contenders, while magazine Kicker suggested that starting Ozil proved to be a badly judged idea.
