Angelo Ogbonna provides stability and defensive solidity for West Ham versus Arsenal.

West Ham

The new West Ham defender impressed against Premier League title contenders Arsenal this weekend.

Angelo Ogbanna emerged as a star performer for West Ham as Slaven Bilic's side recorded a shock 2-0 victory over London Rivals Arsenal.

A Petr Cech mistake on the stroke of half-time allowed Cheikhou Kouyate to nod the Hammers into the lead, before Mauro Zarate made sure of the three points with a long-range strike in the second half.

The 27-year-old, signed for the Hammers from Italian Serie A champions and Champions League runners-up Juventus this summer, proved an assured performer throughout, quashing the attacking threat of Arsenal's attacking talent with relative ease.

Despite being Booked for a challenge on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain within 10 minutes, he did not let the early caution prevent him defending superbly throughout.

He won six duels in total, including three tackles and two successful aerial duels.

Meanwhile, he further proved his ability to read the game, weighing in with one interception and a match-best eight clearances.

He will need to work on his distribution from the back - having found the target from just 74% of his passes. However, this will not doubt be due to the high pressure and intensity of the occasion.

It was a hugely promising debut for the Italian international defender, who - having played at the highest level of European football just last season - looks as if he will be a regular star performer for the Hammers.
