Southampton fans react on Twitter to Yoshida's performance against Newcastle

Southampton drew 2-2 with Newcastle United this weekend but what did Saints fans make of Maya Yoshida's contribution?

Southampton started their new Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw away to Newcastle United this weekend.

Graziano Pelle put Ronald Koeman’s side ahead before goals either side of half-time from Papiss Cisse and Georginio Wijnaldum gave Newcastle a 2-1 lead.

That was how it stayed until 11 minutes from time when substitute Shane Long equalised and ensured Southampton travelled home with a share of the spoils.

With former loanee Toby Alderweireld now a permanent Tottenham Hotspur player, Southampton are currently relying on the centre-back pairing of Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida and the latter came in for some criticism on social media after the match.

The Japan international has played 74 times for Southampton including 23 times last season, but after being part of a defence that conceded two on the opening weekend and later missing a good chance to score himself, Yoshida will be aiming for better next time out.

After the match we took to Twitter to see what Southampton fans thought of Yoshida’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
