The French midfield playmaker has caught the eye in France over the years and was previously a target for the club. However his last season with Marseille was not great and Newcastle were reportedly ready to pounce.
Just a week ago The Mirror were reporting that Newcastle United’s interest in the player was not yet over. They have already had bids for the player rejected this summer, including ones that involved a Remy Cabella swap, however and it looked like a move for Thauvin was off the cards.
However, events at Marseille yesterday may have changed everything.
The club lost their manager in Marcelo Bielsa. He stepped down after defeat to SM Caen in Ligue 1.
On top of that, Thauvin has reportedly got into an altercation with a Marseille fan.
L’Equipe are reporting that angry fans spat at Thauvin’s vehicle as he left the Stade Velodrome last night and the midfielder, who is known for his spiky temper, got out of the car and remonstrated with fans of his own team.
At this juncture his future with Marseille looks to be in serious doubt.
However the change in manager might end up being a good thing for Thauvin, perhaps a fresh start at the club.
If not, than Newcastle might be waiting in the wings to swoop.
Thauvin would represent an excellent signing for Newcastle despite his troubles. Even today, despite some good business in the transfer market, the Newcastle team against Southampton still contained the likes of Gabriel Obertan, who, in fairness, had a good game.
Thauvin however could operate in that three behind the striker with ease and if he is available at the right price, Newcastle should definitely make a move.
