He made Sunderland look silly: Twitter reacts to Riyad Mahrez's opening weekend performance

Leicester City - King Power Stadium

Riyad Mahrez proved too hot to handle as Leicester overcame Sunderland.

Claudio Ranieri enjoyed a dream return to the Premier League as Leicester recorded an emphatic 4-2 victory over Sunderland on the opening day of the season.

Jamie Vardy scored and Riyad Mahrez netted a double before half-time to leave the Black Cats in an uncomfortable situation.

Despite Jermain Defoe and Steven Fletcher's strikes in the second period, Marc Albrighton's 66th-minute strike confirmed a comprehensive victory for the hosts.

However, it was two-goal hero Riyad Mahrez who stole the plaudits following an outstanding display.

Thanks to a sterling performance from the Algerian, who caused turmoil for the opposition defence while operating down the flanks, Ranieri began his time at Leicester in the perfect manner.

For the time being at least, the Tinkerman's side lie at the top of the Premier League table when some had predicted them to be nearer the bottom prior to the campaign beginning.

Following Mahrez's influential weekend display, here is how Twitter reacted: some suggested he is capable of playing for a Champions League club in the future; while others simply focused on the mauling that he gave Dick Advocaats' Black Cats.
