Dimitri Payet says Joe Cole influenced his move to West Ham

Dimitri Payet joined Premier League outfit West Ham United in June.

Dimitri Payet has told The Sun that he spoke to Joe Cole before joining West Ham United in the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old attacking midfielder moved to the Hammers from French club Marseille in June.

The France international has said that he spoke to former West Ham star Cole before joining the London outfit.

“I’ve met Joe Cole,” Payet told The Sun. “He spoke about West Ham in a very positive way. That is one of the main reasons why I signed here.

“Joe told me that this is a very good club to play for and if you give 100 per cent the fans will be right behind you…

“I’m well aware of the fact that I also need to go out and give 100 per cent myself and be in that category of players that have done well here before. But Joe is the person who motivated me to sign for West Ham.”

Payet was one of the best players in Ligue 1, and his arrival at West Ham has enhanced the London club’s chances of a top-eight finish in the Premier League this season.

The Frenchman scored seven goals and created 134 chances in 36 Ligue 1 appearances for Marseille last season.

Cole, now at Aston Villa, is regarded by many as one of the best players produced by West Ham in recent years.

The 33-year-old English attacker developed at West Ham’s youth academy and went on to play for Chelsea and Liverpool, before returning to the Hammers for a second spell in January 2013.
