Arsenal may have only made one signing to date this summer but the arrival of Petr Cech was tipped by many to be the difference between success and failure in the Premier League this season.
Well, things did not go according to plan on the opening weekend, with the former Chelsea stopper dropping a clanger to gift West Ham the lead before going on to concede a second.
Midfielder Francis Coquelin was also not at the races and despite his breakthrough campaign last season he looked anything but the solution to Arsenal’s midfield problems against the Hammers.
The 24-year-old failed to impose himself on the game and he was replaced shortly before the hour-mark by Theo Walcott.
Coquelin played 22 league matches for Arsenal last season, returning from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic and never looking back, but on this evidence the Gunners need to sign another defensive midfielder before the transfer window slams shut.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Arsenal fans thought of Coquelin’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Coquelin not disciplined— TriniGööner (@SpiritOf2004) August 9, 2015
Tbh, I have been worried that Coquelin would flop this season for a few weeks now. I HOPE today was a one off— TheGamerCan / Curt ށ (@CurtisMorton) August 9, 2015
Coquelin today showed we still desperately need a holding midfielder like we have done for many years— George (@SuffolkGunner) August 9, 2015
Obviously disappointed. System just didn't work today, w/ Coquelin, Ramsey, Cazorla and Özil all playing. Predictable and narrow, for me.— Darren Borg (@DarrenBorg) August 9, 2015
Coquelin really needs to learn how to recieve the ball from deep, ozil and ramsey are definitly not going to do that— MJabril (@0MJameen) August 9, 2015
We might just be over rating Coquelin. good defensively but man can't build up— David (@akalugo_) August 9, 2015
