Alan Shearer lambasts Sunderland defending in Leicester City defeat

Sunderland Gates

The former forward was not impressed by either Younes Kaboul or Sebastien Coates on Saturday.

Speaking on Match of the Day, broadcast on BBC One from 10.30pm on Saturday, Alan Shearer described Sunderland’s defending in the loss to Leicester City as a horror show.

The Black Cats were heavily beaten on the opening day of the Premier League season as they eventually lost 4-2.

It was a defensive horror show from Dick Advocaat’s side as they found themselves 3-0 down at one point, with Younes Kaboul, who joined from Tottenham this summer, having a particularly bad day.

And Shearer did not hold back on his criticism on his Match of the Day analysis od the defeat.

“It was an absolute horror show defensively it was really that bad,” he told Match of the Day.

“For the first half I thought it was bad but for one or two instances in the second half it was really bad. It doesn’t take a genius to work out what Sunderland will be working on in training this week they were absolutely awful.”

Defensive concerns for Advocaat

Sunderland’s defending will have certainly worried manager Dick Advocaat, but a bigger concern will be the performance from his new central defensive pairing.

Younes Kaboul didn’t enjoy the greatest of times at Tottenham and on this evidence seems to have brought that form with him to the Stadium of Light. Conversely, Sebastien Coates was in fine form during his loan spell last season, but was another who had a bad day in the defeat.

Given how poorly both Wes Brown and John O’Shea performed last season as well, perhaps Advocaat may look to reinforce his defence further this summer given how badly things went yesterday.
