Tottenham Hotspur newbie Kevin Wimmer backs Manchester United's Bastian Schweinsteiger to come good

Bastian Schweinsteiger Injured In Bayern Munich Training

The Austrian believes his former Bundesliga opponent will eventually cut it at Old Trafford.

Today sees the Premier League begin once again, with Manchester United and Tottenham going head-to-head in the opening fixture.

It will be a chance for several of the new signings for each team to shine. Yesterday, one of Tottenham’s newbies was discussing one of United’s.

Kevin Wimmer was signed from Bundesliga side FC Koln this summer. He played against new United signing Bastian Schweinsteiger in Germany and he has been speaking about the former Bayern Munich man in an interview with Sport 1.

Schweinsteiger cost United a fee reported by The Guardian to be in the region of £15 million this summer.

However he has struggled for form in pre-season, clearly still struggling from the previous campaign, where he battled for fitness and football in Munich.

But Wimmer believes Schweinsteiger will come good:

"Bastian has achieved everything in his career. He is one of the best midfielders ever, but of course he will need a little adjustment period. We would not mind if he is not so in shape, but I think that he will prevail in England."

The German international may indeed come good, but he is unlikely to feature today.

He has been in poor form and is clearly not yet at 100%, even Louis van Gaal has made it clear that he is not yet at the condition necessary to thrive in the Premier League.

So United fans and wimmer might have to wait a while before they see him at his peak.
