Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has told the club's official website of his delight with striker Rudy Gestede following the striker's winning goal against Bournemouth today.
Villa recorded a hard-fought win over Bournemouth this afternoon, with new signing Gestede winning the game with a header 17 minutes from time.
The Benin international, 26, joined Villa at the end of last month having smashed 35 goals in 73 games for previous club Blackburn Rovers - and was immediately seen as a potential replacement for Christian Benteke due to his strength and superb aerial ability.
Gestede showed those attributes today with his winning goal, powering a header home to win the game for Villa - and manager Tim Sherwood was full of praise for his new signing during an interview with the club's official website following the game.
"I don't think our centre-backs are too happy defending against him every day in training," said Sherwood. "He attacks the ball, he throws everything at it. He flies in and hurts people if they get in his way but seems to get up himself. He terrorises defenders, doesn't give them a minute but he's more than just a battering ram. He's very accurate with his heading and his hold up play is very, very good. He gives us another dimension."
"Everyone worked hard to get Rudy in. We've tracked him for a long time - I certainly have - and I mentioned him to the scouting department. The reports were very good so everyone was in agreement that he'd be a good acquisition. I've done a lot of due diligence work, finding out about his character and no one said a bad word about him. He has a very, very good mentality. He has an excellent training work ethic - fantastic," he added.
The arrival of Jordan Ayew may have attracted more headlines, but Gestede has many similar attributes to former hero Benteke, and could end up being the ideal replacement for the Belgian.
Today's display was a great sign of what could follow for Gestede and Villa, and fans will certainly be encouraged by his performance against Bournemouth. Replacing Benteke is a huge, daunting task, but Gestede has the attributes and the mentality to succeed under Sherwood this season and beyond.
