The Serbian played under his management at FC Twente in Holland.
Dusan Tadic, who had an excellent debut season at Southampton yesterday, was managed by McClaren at Dutch side FC Twente.
The Serb has been speaking about the Toon boss today.
He told the official Southampton website how much he thinks of McLaren and he had nothing but kind words to say about the former England boss:
“He taught me about a winning mentality, to take responsibility and to work hard. These kind of things were important.
“He really helped me. He brought me from Groningen to Twente and because of him I made the move. Not only because of him, but he was the main reason.
“It was great, and there was a great connection between us. I always said when he left Twente it was sad, but this is football.
“He’s a great manager and a great person. It was a pleasure to work with him. For sure he’s going to make Newcastle better.”
Newcastle fans will be hoping that McClaren can enforce a similar relationship with some of the Toon players.
The new gaffer has a massive task turning things around at St James Park, which has become something of a laughing stock for outsiders in recent times.
McLaren is coming to the club off the back of failure at Derby County but has previously had big success at Middlesbrough and with Tadic at Eredivisie outfit Twente.
Tadic certainly seems to be full of praise for the Newcastle boss, although tomorrow he will be doing his best to put a frown on his face.
Time will tell if Newcastle’s current crop get a similar feeling from the new gaffer.
