The BBC pundit was impressed by two of Villa's new recruits on Saturday afternoon.
Indeed, the pundit has lauded Tim Sherwood for bringing Richards to Villa Park this summer and immediately installing him as club captain.
And the former Premier League striker has also praised Gestede, who settled Villa's win by scoring a second-half winner.
Shearer said on Match of the Day: "I was impressed with him today. It was a big call making him captain. He was very composed, particularly second half, he read the game very well. He’s big strong and he’s quick. He’ll bring a lot to Aston Villa."
Meanwhile, on Gestede, Shearer added: "They’ve got someone in the box who gives them a presence. He’ll get better when he gets fitter. He’ll be a threat."
Shearer's praise is well timed as both Richards and Gestede are likely to play a huge part in Aston Villa's season.
The 26-year-old striker showed just what he can do coming off the bench against Bournemouth but, when fully fit, he'll certainly be a starter and the man Villa's set-piece takers will look out for first.
Richards, meanwhile, won't just be marshaling the defence but the Aston Villa team as a whole. The centre-back, also 26, will need to buck Villa's recent trend of being poor defensively. But a clean sheet away from home is certainly a brilliant start.
