The Premier League game at St. James’ Park will be the 20-year-old striker's first competitive match for the Magpies, having joined them from Belgian giants Anderlecht last month.
Former Newcastle striker Owen believes that the Serbia international will be on target against Southampton at home on Sunday.
“Saints have a good recent record against the Magpies but I have heard good reports about the Geordies’ new striker Aleksandar Mitrovic and I take him to make a scoring debut for my former club,” the former Manchester United and Liverpool man wrote on Betvictor.com.
Mitrovic is likely to start for Newcastle and lead the line against Southampton, and fans will hope that he scores.
Playing at home for his competitive debut is certainly going to help the youngster and enhance his confidence.
Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren is going to play an attacking game, and that is going to be helpful for Mitrovic.
However, even if Mitrovic does not score, Newcastle fans should not be disappointed, as he is still quite young and will need some time to adapt to the Premier League.
