Roma legend Francesco Totti was full of praise for Lionel Messi after playing against the Argentine recently, stating that the Barcelona man was “an incomparable champion”, as per the player’s official website.
The current European champions showed that they are not set to take their foot of the pedal this season with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Italian outfit.
Messi returned for his first showing in pre-season for the Blaugrana, after captaining Argentina at the Copa America in Chile over the summer, where the Albiceleste were beaten on penalties in the final by the hosts.
Totti was full of praise for Messi in the aftermath of the game and has taken to his personal website to explain his respect for the four-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“On Wednesday night we were given the honour of playing against Barca at the Camp Nou,” Totti said.
“Aside from the result, playing against teams of this exceptional level allows you to grow, and to store up some valuable experience.
“It was a pleasure to find Luis Enrique again and to measure ourselves against the many Blaugrana champions.
“It's only fair to make a special mention for Lionel Messi, who proved yet again that he is not only an incomparable champion, but also a model of kindness.
“He's a real ace, and a great lad.”
Messi is the frontrunner for this year’s Ballon d’Or award after inspiring the Catalan powerhouses to a momentous treble last season.
The 28-year-old was criticised in his homeland for not leading Argentina to the Copa America crown over the summer, but is adored in Barcelona for his feats of individualism for the historic club.
