The former midfielder was responding to a Sunderland fan on social media.
Dietmar Hamann believes there's a definite chance of Sunderland finishing bottom after their 4-2 loss to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.
Indeed, the former midfielder predicted a poor season for the Black Cats before the campaign began and one supporter was unhappy with the verdict.
However, after seeing Sunderland lose 4-2 at Leicester, the same fan delivered a little U-turn, apologising to Hamann and admitting finishing 20th is a possibility if they continue to play like that.
In response, the pundit says he hopes Dick Advocaat's side don't finish bottom - but can easily see it happening.
I hope they don't but I think there's a chance. https://t.co/un4MMUpyjB— Didi Hamann (@DietmarHamann) August 8, 2015
@DietmarHamann apologies Mr Hamann ..... If Sunderland play like that we will finish bottom !— David Ashplant (@davidashplant25) August 8, 2015
Advocaat has reiterated his desire to sign new players at the Stadium of Light but he will have to get more from his existing squad after their humiliating opening-day loss.
Sunderland were 3-0 down before half-time and the likes of Younes Kaboul went completely missing while the Foxes ran riot.
It may just be an outlier in that the Sunderland boss will sort his charges out soon. But, as stated on Twitter, relegation is almost a certainty if they play that badly every week.
