The Argentine international is set to stay with Napoli this season.
Middlesbrough will have to start again in their hunt for a new goalkeeper, after yet another Italian-based option rejected a move to Riverside.
The player in question is Mariano Andujar of Napoli.
The Argentine keeper was the subject of a successful bid from Boro, according to Tutto Mercato Web, and all that was left to be agreed were personal terms.
However, the 32-year-old has decided to remain at Napoli despite not being a regular in Naples.
However, TG Gialloblu then reported that the player was not keen on a move and that Boro had not made any form of contact with the club or Rafael’s Belgian based representatives.
That would therefore seem to suggest that Boro will need to look elsewhere for their new stopper.
Boro only currently have Dimitrios Konstantopoulos and Tomas Mejias on their books so another keeper would seem to make sense, as they look to go one better than last season and earn promotion to the Premier League in 2015-16.
