The Newcastle defender signed a new contract until the end of the 2016/17 season.
Colocinni ended any rumours concerning his future by agreeing a one-year deal with Newcastle.
The news was confirmed by the official club website, and it means that Coloccini remains club captain at St James’ Park.
He may have endured a tough pre-season, being left out of matchday squads by Steve McClaren, but it is likely that the Argentine centre-back will be a key first-team member this season.
The Magpies are not well stocked at centre-back, and, on his day, Coloccini is arguably the best defender the club possess. He will be able to show his talent and leadership on the pitch, whilst also being a great mentor for young Chancel Mbemba - who signed for the club this summer from Anderlecht.
Coloccini also has the benefit of being comfortable on the ball and suiting a technical system, which means he is a good fit for Steve McClaren’s tactics.
Despite his lack of appearances in pre-season, it would still come as no surprise to see Coloccini play a major part in the campaign for the Tyneside club.
When the news was announced, fans took to Twitter to discuss the contract extension, and we gather the best responses.
All in all, Coloccini penning the extension is a good sign for #NUFC. Clearly commited to the club and believes in the new regime/coaches.— The Perennial Pundit (@PerennialPundit) August 7, 2015
Say what you want, I think Coloccini is by far our best defender and I'm glad he's tied down. In a positive atmosphere he'll do good #nufc— DuckMan180 (@ClellandMichael) August 6, 2015
Coloccini signed a new deal he's not good enough any more we still need to sign 2 more defenders !! #NUFC— Ryan Ibbetson (@Buckz_) August 6, 2015
@toonphotography Really needed a good leader for captaincy and Coloccini isn't one— Akin Şahin (@A_sahin09) August 6, 2015
I think the Coloccini extension is a good move, still keeps himself in good shape and can now play alongside a quick CH in Mbemba.— Ryan Bell (@RyanBelly) August 6, 2015
wasn't expecting that... but good news about Coloccini. Been nowhere near his best for a while but still our best cb by some way #nufc— David Lloyd (@D_lloyd37) August 6, 2015
New Coloccini contract!!! Didn't see that coming #NUFC good news that— Chris (@Bettsy2015) August 6, 2015
Coloccini staying #NUFC captain is a massive statement from that we don't intend on signing another Centre back good enough to replace him.— JOSH (@JoshDWReeve) August 5, 2015
If Coloccini can play with an on form Mbemba beside him, they could be a good pairing. But Colo needs to wake up! #NUFC— NUFC 360 (@NUFC360) August 2, 2015
Only just heard about Coloccini's contract. Good news I think. Yes he was dreadful last but he is quality.— Feesh (@MrFeesh) August 6, 2015
