Barcelona’s new signing Arda Turan has revealed that Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has offered to give him his number 10 shirt for the upcoming campaign, Spanish paper Diario Sport report.
The Turkey international joined the Catalans from Atletico Madrid this summer, though he won’t be able to play for the club until January due to their current transfer embargo.
Nevertheless, Turan will be given a squad number for the upcoming campaign, with plenty of speculation regarding what it might be, especially considering the competition for places.
Speaking to reporters on the matter, the former Galatasaray man says he is no closer to making his decision, but revealed he could take Messi’s number 10 after a conversation with the superstar.
“When I entered the national team I took the number 14 because my father is a fan of Cruyff, but for me the number of the shirt is not that important,” he explained.
“I will decide in January. Messi told me that if I wanted the number 10, I can have it [he laughed]. I can play in a number of positions and I’m going to work towards that.”
Future role in Barcelona:
Turan is capable of playing in a number of positions, yet he is most comfortable with the ball at his feet, in congested areas looking to provide for his teammates.
He is an ideal competitor for Andres Iniesta’s position in the middle three, and one which he will most likely share with the 31-year-old depending on form, opponents and fitness, among other factors.
Barcelona will once again target a unique treble of La Liga, Copa Del Rey and Champions League in 2015/16, though they have the opportunity to add another three trophies before the turn of the New Year.
