The Dutchman missed a golden opportunity to get Newcastle United safe v West Ham.
Newcastle United survived the drop from the Premier League by the skin of their teeth last season, thanks to a final day triumph over West Ham United.
The game finished 2-0, with one man in particular in fantastic form.
The player in question was Vurnon Anita. Lambasted for his form since arriving at St James Park from Ajax, he put in his best performance for the Toon since his arrival to help them to survival.
But he could have been the villain just as easily.
He raced clear with the score at 1-0 and either had a square ball on to set up an open goal, or he had to slide home a comfortable finish to wrap up the points.
In the end he did neither, practically giving the ball to Adrian in the West Ham goal.
Speaking to the Shields Gazette today, he spoke about the moment and how thankful he was when former club hero Jonas Gutierrez put the game to bed:
“I think that’s going to be the starting point – to play like that every game. For me as well.
“How I played that game, I want to draw the line like that and go forward like that.
“Afterwards I thought ‘I messed up!’. Thankfully, Jonas scored straight away, so it was a relief for myself.
“But I was so mad at myself at that moment. Still on vacation I thought about it!”
This preseason has seen Anita in much better form. The Dutchman appears to have finally established his best position and Steve McLaren looks like he is a fan of the player.
Hopefully he will continue to improve and maybe even touch up in his finishing before the season starts.
