Former Manchester City and Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has denied reports that he is training with Premier League new boys Watford ahead of the new season with a view to joining their ranks.
Reports were carried in the London Evening Standard, among other publications, that Barton was training with the Hornets in the hope of earning a move to Vicarage Road, and that he wanted to stay in the Premier League.
However, one publication that ran a story saying Barton was not training with the club was the Watford Observer, and Barton himself seems to have poured cold water on such suggestions on Twitter:
Whose training with Watford? Me? First I've heard.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) August 7, 2015
Not sure how certain media ascertain information. Then run a story based on nothing. Baffling.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) August 7, 2015
It will be interesting to see where Barton ends up next with the Premier League season getting underway tomorrow, but as he is a free agent, sides do not have to strike a deal with the player before the end of the transfer window next month.
Ever since he was released by QPR, following their relegation out of the Premier League, he has been linked with several clubs. The midfielder was on £70,000 per week during his time at Loftus Road - as reported by the Daily Mail - and it is hard to envisage a side that will take him on for such wages, so wherever Barton ends up next the chances are that he will have to take a pay cut.
