Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports that Liverpool should have signed a defensive midfielder this summer.
The former Liverpool defender seems to believe that having Emre Can and Lucas Leiva for that position is not enough.
“But I would have liked to have seen them sign a defensive midfield player, with Steven Gerrard having moved on,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“Emre Can can maybe step in there and you still have Lucas Leiva, but it looks like a position that Liverpool need to fill, and it is one that I am slightly surprised they haven’t given their defensive record over the last few years.”
Carragher does have a point, but the fact is that both Can and Lucas are defensive midfielders.
Although 21-year-old Can was deployed as a defender for a good chunk of last season, he is a defensive midfielder by trade.
Lucas has been on the books of Liverpool since 2007 and is a hugely experienced player.
Liverpool’s summer signings
Liverpool have made a number of signings so far this season, as the Merseyside outfit attempt to return to the top four of the Premier League.
The likes of James Milner, Danny Ings, Christian Benteke, Nathaniel Clyne and Roberto Firmino are all going to enhance the quality of the Reds.
It will be interesting to see how long the new signings take to settle in at Liverpool. That will be key to the Reds’ success this season.
