Everton surprise new bookies' favourites in Austin chase; Tottenham, West Ham odds drift

The Queens Park Rangers striker is now odds on to join the Toffees, with Newcastle United just behind in the running.

As of Friday night, Everton are the new bookies' favourites to sign QPR striker Charlie Austin, according to Sky Bet.

Indeed, the 26-year-old has been linked with a QPR exit all summer, with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United all considered to be in pole position to sign him at one point or another during the transfer window.

With plenty of Spurs speculation over the last few days, however, it comes as a shock that Everton have shot into the lead, with odds of 4/6 to bring Austin on board.

Newcastle sit behind the Toffees at 3/1 to sign the QPR forward. But Tottenham and West Ham have seen their odds drift. The north London side were the previous favourites and are now down to 4/1, while the Hammers are at a distant 7/1, as per Sky Bet.

Any closer to a resolution?

Austin may well play for QPR in the Championship this weekend, as the R's take on Charlton Athletic. The surge in betting on Everton, though, is definitely a new twist in the striker saga.

But betting had been suspended on Austin joining Newcastle earlier this summer, meaning there may well be a new favourite once again in the coming days.

Tottenham are expected to sign a new forward and so are West Ham, while the Magpies have already recruited Aleksandar Mitrovic. Yet it's Everton in pole position, according to the bookies...
