Carragher questions Arsenal's defensive strength ahead of new season

Former England defender Jamie Carragher has explained that he feels Arsenal need to try and improve their defensive strength.

Former England defender Jamie Carragher explained on Sky Sports that he doesn’t feel Arsenal are strong enough through the middle of their defence.

Carragher has suggested that Arsenal should have made more of an effort to sign another world class centre back earlier in the summer, as they prepare for their opening game of the season against West Ham.

However, he feels it’s more likely to be a case of three players competing for the two centre back positions over the course of the year.

“Not really - I am a big fan of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker is a good player and a World Cup winner. You have those two and Gabriel Paulista, who they bought in January,” Carragher told

“Instead of signing Paulista, I would have liked to have seen them sign a top centre-back, so that the three of them are vying for two positions. As it still looks to be as though Koscielny and Mertesacker are first choice and there is no real danger of them losing their positions.”

What are the options facing Wenger?

There is still time left in the transfer window for Arsene Wenger to go and sign some extra centre back cover, which will be important over the course of the next football year.

However, what’s arguably more likely is that Wenger will rely on options he already has in his squad to step forward and make a difference if someone like Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny pick up a problem.

Calum Chambers is a good example of someone who can play on either side of central defence, but another high profile signing would help the club to send out a real message to their rivals.
