The Spurs faithful can't come to a decision over the Argentine.
It's rare that a player so subtly divides opinion quite like Erik Lamela does.
Indeed, the Tottenham Hotspur winger has both his extreme critics and loyal supporters. He also has those who have only just run out of patience and those willing to give him plenty more time. And, after Glenn Hoddle's recent comments about the 23-year-old, the comments section on the HITC Sport pages has embodied that exact division of opinion.
Hoddle, a Tottenham icon, is well respected for his opinions and his suggestion was that Lamela will be sold in January if he doesn't perform early doors for the north London side. Many agreed and many disagreed, just as has been happening since the Argentine completed his big-money move to the White Hart Lane outfit.
The simple truth, of course, is that Lamela has nowhere near lived up to his price-tag. But could he at least come near doing so this season and should he be kept at Spurs if so?
That's the very issue to have caused so much debate among Tottenham fans and here is a selection of the supporter comments on the 23-year-old's future - one of the big talking points at the Lane at the moment:
Mr. Greaves wrote: 'It is a tricky situation.
'He does need to deliver week in, week out soon or depart. Last season the stats make him sound good by virtue of assists, but I know what my eyes told me and that wasn't that he was worth playing ineven one game. In the last few games of the season he started to look like there was a PL player there - not a special one though.
'People say he has talent and we can't sell him now as he is starting to prove it, and there is truth in that but what happens if by the end of the season he still looks like a talented U18 playing with the men, but still looking like a boy?
'I really hope he emerges this season, but if I were a betting man, I would be putting my money on another season like last thereby proving sadly that he isn't PL material.'
Vegguy wrote: 'Lamela will show up better this year and come into his own and Eriksen will continue to improve.
'Hoddle's propensity for negative comments sells space but it isn't usually based on reality.'
Hodsgod wrote: 'Sell him now, what a waste of time and money'
Lbanus wrote: 'The sheer effort Lamela puts in should give Tottenham supporters the impetus to get behind him because its obvious to all and sundry that he is a special talent and one that is more likely than not to have a good season. I'd be much more concerned with Eriksen's hot and cold performances as its something the team cannot afford if it is to progress in the more competitive competition The Premiership has become. Eriksen can only play in the middle and while that's probably Lamela's best position too, he can manage to play wide as well. A major problem for Tottenham last season was that when Eriksen failed to really show up the entire team effort fell apart. And unfortunately, that happened on far too many occasions as the season progressed. Yes he can be brilliant in games but the question remains can he become a consistently good player for a team? I hope he can demonstrate that he can because its really the only thing that is holding him back from becoming a top star. Good luck to both of these players this season.'
Peter London wrote: 'This time last year, there was annoyance from some at Harry Kane not being "moved on" because, reading between the lines of such grumbles, he wasn't flashy enough or expensive enough or whatever else enough. He just didn't look interesting, did he? No mad hair, no tattoos, no flashiness.
'These are young players, they are all still developing, and all have been learning and contributing to team effort. That other poster is right too, good though he is Bentaleb can play sloppily enough to lose the ball in dangerous situations, and I've noticed he can fire the ball at goal with little precision — I'm not for moving him on, though. He too is young.'
Gdaman wrote: 'The problem I have with this situation is that Eriksen has a wicked right foot in the dead ball situation but in open play Lamela delivers a much better through ball which is why his assists are so high - Lamela needs to play in the pocket more often because of the chances he creates from that position. He also puts in the hard work when it comes to tackling which Eriksen and Chadli don't. I hope Lamela scores more goals this season though as it seems the fans are blind to all his other qualities
'Another thing - has anyone noticed that Nabil Bentaleb gives at least 2 goalscoring opportunities to the opposition per game with careless passes putting our defense under huge pressure yet all I ever hear about the boy is how great he is - I think Deli Ali is a far better prospect for us'
Ped wrote: 'Lamela must improve.. He's had a season & failed to make it in the premiere league.. Things will only get harder when Pritchard gets back from injury... Sorry but I can't see the lad here after January'
