Sunderland's Jack Rodwell on the importance of a good start

Sunderland's slow start last season led to them struggling come the second half of the campaign.

Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell has been explaining the importance of the side getting off to a good start to the season in the Sunderland Echo

The Black Cats have been slow starters in recent years which has contributed to ending up in precarious positions in the Premier League and having to battle to avoid the drop.

The fixture list looks as though it presents an opportunity for Sunderland to get some momentum behind them pretty early on in the season, as their first four games are against Leicester, Norwich, Swansea and Aston Villa.

Rodwell told the Sunderland Echo: “You don’t want to be four games into the season and not having a win.

“That’s when that tension builds and you can understand that, from a supporter’s point of view.

“It builds from us as well, not just the fans.

“You can sense it in the atmosphere at the ground, and that’s understandable.

“But the first few games are good for us this year.”

On paper, one would suggest that the clash against Swansea City is the hardest Sunderland will face prior to the first international break of the season.

Leicester City and Aston Villa were last season involved in the relegation battle along with Sunderland, and Norwich are Premier League newboys. Though none of the sides should be underestimated, there is an opportunity to get some points on the board early.

It will be interesting to see just how bold the Black Cats are when they approach their opening games.
