Ronald Koeman comments on Southampton’s interest in Virgil van Dijk

Southampton have been linked with making a move for the Celtic defender.

Florin Gardos was struck down with a six month injury, leaving Southampton to look for another centre-back, but Ronald Koeman has refused to be in drawn into whether the Saints are looking at Virgil van Dijk, when speaking to the Daily Echo.

He said: “Yes, we need one more in that position [centre-back]. It’s a lot in the media about the player. I think it’s the best in my position to say nothing about that, because everybody knows he’s a good player, it’s a lot of interest for the player. Let’s see what happens.”

Although not denying an interest in van Dijk, Koeman has certainly not admitted that he is actively moving to sign a ‘good player’, as he calls van Dijk.

ESPN reported that van Dijk was a target for the Saints as they look to add further competition to the defensive lines, despite Steven Caulker already arriving on loan from QPR.

Koeman has confirmed that he wants to bring in at least one more centre-back, and van Dijk looks a great option.

He is still only 24-years-old, and has shown that he already has an impressive ability in Scottish football and in Europe. Of course, doubts will remain about him until he starts to appear in a top level league, and a move to St Mary’s could appeal to him as he plans to further his career.

However, Koeman has refused to be drawn into whether he will be making a move for van Dijk in the coming weeks, but if he is a wise head coach, the Dutch centre-back looks like a perfect option.
